The Active Families programme for early years focuses on the universal and targeted prevention of overweight and obesity by creating a supportive environment that helps families with children aged 0 – 5 years maintain a healthy weight.
The programme is for parents and/or carers who are concerned about their family’s health, in particular their food intake, physical activity level and maintenance of a healthy weight. The programme also has elements that support pre-school settings and their staff in maintaining a healthy, safe, enjoyable environment to achieve.
The Healthy Weight Programme is part of Wigan Leisure & Culture Trust’s Active Living Team and is funded through Wigan Council’s Peoples Directorate: Preventative Family Support.
We have a range of sessions for families consisting of:
Weaning courses - a 3-week course that offers support on safe and effective feeding for parents with babies aged 0 – 4 months. The course covers practical weaning tips and developmental ideas for your baby.
Healthy ME Healthy YOU - a 6-week course for parents who would like support and ideas on how to lead a healthier lifestyle. The course includes practical cooking, physical activity ideas and nutritional knowledge. There is a free creche provided for these sessions.
Pre-School Programme - a targeted pre school programme that supports early years practitioners and settings to deliver a 6-week programme of health including healthy eating, oral health and increasing physical activity.
Physical Activity Training Award - a 2-day course that will provide early years practitioners with the opportunity to increase their knowledge around structuring and planning a safe and effective physical activity session for children aged 2 – 5 years.

Sessions are held borough wide and are specifically linked to the 19 Children's Centres in Wigan. Sessions take place in a number of venues for example within Children's Centres, schools, nurseries, community venues, leisure venues and outdoor in our local parks.
The programme provides a FREE universal and borough wide range of initiatives that are designed to promote the benefits of eating a healthy balanced diet and taking regular physical activity.
Sessions are delivered specifically by promoting lifestyle changes that look to increase physical activity, decrease sedentary behaviour and improve eating behaviour and quality of children’s diets.
