What is Active Choices?

The Active Choice Programme is for adults aged 16 years and over with a learning disability, physical disability or severe and enduring mental illness. The aim of the programme is to offer physical activity opportunities to:

  • Help improve health
  • Help improve quality of life and
  • Increase confidence
How do I join?

Contact the team on 01942 488481.

Do I need to be referred?

You will need a referral from a health professional if you have any medical problems (link to Active Living Referral Scheme page). They will fill in an Active Living Referral form on your behalf and fax it through to our team, we will then give you a call to see when you would like to start your programme. If you don’t have any medical problems but will still like to arrange an appointment to start then please contact the team.

Will I have to wait for an appointment?

No, there are no waiting lists to join the programme so you can be seen as soon as we receive your referral form and we will contact you to arrange an appointment. If you don’t have any medical problems but will still like to arrange an appointment to start then please contact the team.

How much does it cost?

Activities are at a reduced cost and range from £1.00 to £3.00. Certain activities are free, such as Health Walks.

What sessions are available and where?

Please use the activity search to see the full range of sessions available. We can also help with the joining of Profiles Health and Fitness Suites by carrying out inductions and providing support on a 1:1, or small group basis for up to 6 weeks. We can also help with accessing other Active Living sessions, local sports clubs and other activities within the Wigan Borough by providing support for up to 6 weeks.

Am I limited to the number of activities I can try?

You can try as many activities as you like, with no limit. Most people like to start small and increase sessions gradually, as their confidence increases. There are plenty of activities to choose from and support will be offered along the way.
